Here's a shortlist: cappuccinos, espresso, caffe latte, mocha, flat white, gourmet, iced, double shot espresso and the list goes on.

In my childhood days you had a choice; percolated or instant and we just drank coffee because it help "blow out the cobwebs" first thing in the morning or gave you that kick you needed in the middle afternoon to get through the rest of the day.

So what is the the history of coffee. Who can be accredited with making one of the greatest culinary finds in human history. I say that a little tongue in cheek but in all reality, coffee is such a presence in today's western society that it's a little hard to ignore. How many people owe their livelihoods to the production of this little black liquid?

Okay, research indicates coffee may have first reared it's "bean" about the 10th. century but this could be open to debate. The first coffee shop didn’t open until the year 1475 in Turkey. It wasn’t until the year 1601 that coffee finally made it to North America. In the year 1668 the coffee beverage become New York’s favorite breakfast beverage in place of beer (wow! can you believe that!) and is now known around the world as a breakfast drink that can be enjoyed at any time of the day.

Many Different Options

The options surrounding the preparation of a coffee drink are seemingly endless. As mentioned earlier, every one seems to have an opinion on coffee preparation. Whether you buy coffee beans and grind them yourself or have them packaged already ground for you, it doesn't matter, the end result is generally always the same.

The coffee beverage is also available in single packs much like tea bags, so you can enjoy just a single cup of the finest freshly brewed instead of brewing an entire pot. And for those who don’t want to wait for the coffee beverage to brew, there are instant granules. This is fairly basic and it's hard to botch up a cup of instant coffee. consumers today have a wide variety of coffee to choose from in supermarkets including a bevvy of flavors.

Franchise coffee beverage outlets such as Starbucks, Hudsons, Gloria Jeans and others litter the world's landscapes and are a welcome site for coffee lovers. Drive thru coffee outlets have been popular first stops for people travelling to work in American cities for a long time now and this phenomenon is starting to catch on elsewhere. Coffee is talked about in different terms with the world gourmet now introduced into coffee vocabulary.

For this coffee beverage lover, it's just about that time of the day for caffeine boost. All I've got to decide is what style I'm going to churn out with my new coffeemaker. Cappuccino, caffe latte, flat white....?
